Until recently, this definitive guide to the cichlids of Madagascar, was only available in French. This is the English version. The two authors represent the highest authorities on the cichlid fishes of the threatened habitats of this amazing island, and have contributed significantly to the understanding and conservation of this endangered group through their research and writings.
Sadly, since the book was written one of the co-authors, Jean-Claude Nourissat, succumbed to malaria contracted on his last expedition to the island. The fact that Jean-Claude had already battled through a debilitating bilharzia infection contracted during previous research, and knew that another cichlid researcher (Fréderic Défond) had already been attacked and killed by crocodiles on the island whilst studying the natural habitats of the same fishes, are just two examples of the dedication and sacrifice that both these authors have made during their research, and without which this book would not be possible.
The book offers a thorough and fascinating review of the conservation and taxonomic status of all currently known cichlid populations on this fascinating island, along with marvellous photography, which includes the incredibly varied and beautiful other flora and fauna of the island. From 30cm moths, to brightly coloured chameleons, exotic birds and dangerous crocodiles - the wildlife and also the people of Madagascar are presented alongside our favourites, the cichlids in a truly remarkable book.
Of special significance is the obituary to Jean-Claude Nourissat, which gives an insight into the incredible energy and achievements of both these remarkable authors, who not only discovered new Madagascan species, but in their other travels in Central and South America have contributed greatly to the hobby and science with discoveries such as Vieja argentea in 1987.
