In this DVD, Ad Konings talks about the various kinds of feeding behavior in Malawi cichlids. He uses detailed photos and close-up video footage to explain the sometimes astonishing methods of how these inventive fishes cope with their environment.

No lake in the world contains such a diversified and distinct community of cichlid fishes as Lake Malawi. Over the years Malawi cichlids, which are among the most colorful freshwater fishes known, have become very popular among aquarists as they are easy to maintain and breed in captivity. The total number of cichlid species in the lake is now estimated at about 1000, which is about 200 more than all the freshwater fish species of the North American Continent combined! And there is every indication that still more remain to be discovered.

I know, this price is heartbreaking for those who paid 3 or 4 times this amount not too long ago !!! Blame the 4th edition
Malawi cichlids in their natural habitat

3rd Edition by Ad Konings

Please note that a 4th edition is due out sometime in 2008.  Hence the massive price reduction on this edition by the publisher, which we are passing on to you.  The 3rd edition now represents an amazing bargain for a book that was only published in 2001 and has been THE Malawi cichlid hobbyists´ bible since then.  It is one of the most beautiful books you will ever touch !!  I´m afraid the photos here don´t really do it justice.

Lake Malawi, harbours one of the most interesting and colourful cichlid fish communities on Earth.  More than 850 species are currently recognised, almost all of them found only in this lake and nowhere else!  Many of these cichlids are very popular among aquarists, as they are easy to maintain and breed in captivity.
This third, revised, edition of the definitive study of Lake Malawi cichlids discusses and illustrates more species than
any previous publication. Basing his study on more than 900 hours of underwater observations all over the lake, the author characterizes the species by their habitat preference, distribution, and coloration. More than 1400 excellent photographs — many never published before — illustrate the cichlid fauna of the entire lake. Almost all of these photographs were taken in the lake and show the fishes in their natural habitat.

In recent years, an ever-increasing number of aquarists, interested in the natural environment of their fishes, have been inspired to visit Malawi and observe the cichlids in the lake itself.  Only those who have done so can truly understand the excitement and feeling of fulfillment this involves, but this book offers everyone a unique opportunity to share a little of that enjoyment !

The book is a large edition HARDBACK (8" x 11") composing 352 pages.

A new book describing the work done by Dr. Jos Snoeks and his colleagues in Malawi. The book contains 360 pages and numerous superb color drawings by Dave Voorvelt. In it almost all non-mbuna of Lake Malawi are mentioned and 40 new species described. It will be the new standard for scientists after the revision of the same group by Eccles & Trewavas 15 years ago.

Lake Malawi is a large, beautiful African Rift Valley lake, bordered by Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique. Its biodiversity is simply extraordinary by any standard – it has the greatest wealth of fish species of all the lakes in the world. The vast majority of this ichthyofauna belongs to just one family, the Cichlidae, and most of the cichlid species are endemic to the lake. These fishes are of major economic importance as an important source of protein for the riparian people. They are also of great value as research subjects in a wide array of biological disciplines and are currently at the forefront of evolutionary research. Many of these cichlids, especially the mbuna, enjoy considerable popularity in the specialised aquarium hobby.

Less than half of the 800 or more estimated cichlid species from Lake Malawi are described, and many of those only in superficial terms. All kinds of taxonomic problems abound at both species and genus level. This makes studying these fishes quite a challenge. Several genera or parts of genera have been revised in this book; about forty new species have been described and many species reported for the first time, with each given a provisional working name. About 270 black and white or colour illustrations of these fishes have been included to facilitate their identification. The research reported in this book was carried out as part of the GEF/SADC Lake Malawi/Nyasa Biodiversity Conservation Project in Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique, financed by grants from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and with the support of the UK Department For International Development (DFID). Its results are based on the data collected during the two years of the first ever lake-wide survey programme.

All of the chapters except one were written by members of the systematics team stationed at Senga Bay, Malawi: Jackie Chisambo, Thomas Nyasulu and Rhoda Walapa from Malawi, Ben Ngatunga from Tanzania, Joao Manuel from Mozambique, Mark Hanssens and Jos Snoeks from Belgium. A valuable additional contribution was made by the team of the Ncheni project coordinated by George Turner (UK). Dave Voorvelt, the GEF/SADC project’s artist, has added a lot of extra scientific value to the book through his beautiful and accurate colour illustrations of Malawi fishes.

Jos Snoeks is curator of fishes at the Zoology Department of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, Tervuren, Belgium.

The Cichlids of Lake Malawi

CD-ROM
by Ad Konings

The first CD-ROM produced by Cichlid Press. It contains all the forms and geographical variants of the Malawi cichlids described in the third edition of "Malawi Cichlids in their natural habitat". A total of 5122 (!) photos give the most comprehensive overview of these beautiful fishes, and they are just a click of the mouse away. Species can be searched by genus name, species name or trade name. Browsing the species is made easy by displaying a small photo of the species highlighted. Many species have separate populations usually showing differences in male breeding coloration. All of those are present and can be browsed in the species screen. Each photo is accompanied with a location spot on the map and pressing that spot shows the scenery at that locality. It is also possible to show all localities of a particular species at once which gives a good indication of that species' distribution. Clicking either spot on the map will then show the form of the species at that locality. The entire map of Lake Malawi is available as an interactive map and about 200 locality photos are linked to positions around the lake. Many of them aerial shots provided by Dr. Paul Cooley of the University of Manitoba.

The program on the CD-ROM only works in

Malawi Cichlids
Second Edition
by Ad Konings

Malawi cichlids have been, and will probably always remain, among the most popular aquarium fishes of all time. Their brilliant colors, ease of maintenance, and interesting behavior are the three most important reasons for their popularity.
A selection of these fishes is all you need to create an interesting and decorative aquarium in your home. In order to enjoy your Malawi cichlid aquarium to the full, however, it is essential to take their specific maintenance requirements into account. This new guide provides expert advice on all the elements of proper maintenance, such as choice of aquarium (with details of the minimum size and capacity required for each species discussed), creating the correct water conditions, providing appropriate decor, feeding, breeding, common diseases, etc. A detailed foldout map and 600 photos make this guide indispensable for anyone interested in these beautiful fishes.
This book is a revised and greatly expanded version of the Malawi cichlids guide published in this series in 1997. It contains several new chapters and the number of photos — about 590 are new — has doubled. Follow the book’s basic guidelines and you will soon have a little piece of Lake Malawi in your living room, for you, your family, and your friends to enjoy.
